Xeriscape Garden Tour

Garden Gnome holding pot with Keep Calm and Garden On

The Big Bear Valley Xeriscape Garden Tour, presented by the Sierra Club Big Bear Group on Saturday, July 20th, is your answer to a beautiful low maintenance yard. Whether you live in Big Bear full time or part time, on the lake or amongst the pines, have a yard covered in rocks or on a slope, the Tour is the perfect opportunity to get inspired by beautiful drought-tolerant gardens and find the information and resources it takes to make it happen.

Participants can begin the FREE self-guided tour anytime between 9 am and noon starting at Eminger’s Mountain Nursery, located at 41223 Big Bear Blvd. in Big Bear Lake, across the street from the Denny’s restaurant. A tour booklet, which includes the locations and directions for the tour stops, and helpful information on Xeriscape gardening in the mountains, will be handed out at the starting location. Once registered, participants will have until 4:00 pm to complete the self-guided driving tour.

This year’s theme, “Keep Calm & Garden On,” conveys a dual message. First, despite winter rains the need to garden and landscape appropriately using Xeriscape methods is a timeless effort. Second, following this year’s event, the Xeriscape Garden Tour will become a bi-annual event, returning July 17, 2021.

Each year the tour features between six and seven homes that range in style and budget; some are landscaped by homeowners and others by professionals. The tour also features one home that exemplifies the fire-wise standard and the ever-popular Expo at DWP’s Xeriscape Demonstration Garden on Fox Farm Rd. The Expo offers a native plant exchange, environmental and landscape related booths, Native plant expert Orchid Black and a new speaker, the weed lady, teaching guests which pesky plants are more pleasant on a plate.
